Iconomorphic Graffiti:
A Screenshot of the Contemporary World
Capturing the diversity of our digitized cultures,
social issues, and beliefs through icons
Explore 'Iconomorphic Graffiti' by Olivia R. Blesse, an innovative art series blending street art, her indigenous heritage, and modern iconography.
"Iconomorphic Graffiti: A Screenshot of the Contemporary World" is an art series that focuses on capturing the diversity of our digitized cultures, social issues, and worldviews through icons.
|
It is a synthesis of her influences: street art, her indigenous heritage, positive psychology, ancient motifs, modern anthropology, and contemporary iconography.
|
This collection, painted in acrylic on canvas, captures the diversity, beauty, and complexity of contemporary cultures, social issues, and worldviews. Through her art, Blesse fosters dialogue across differing perspectives, embracing diversity and sparking impactful conversations.
|
Blesse offers a counter perspective to political and social polarization by portraying a "cultural screenshot." This perspective shows the beauty and convolution, the chaos, despairs, and cultural issues as continuous and ubiquitous throughout a holistic world system.
In an increasingly polarized world, Blesse’s artwork encourages cross-perspective dialogue between peoples with passionately differing views. Blesse hopes her artwork can spark meaningful and impactful conversations that embrace diversity and freedom of thought. |

What inspired your new series?
Blesse: "The inspiration for these works stemmed from my fascination with hieroglyphs, cave paintings and early symbolic art. I wanted to step away from all my previous work which depicted objects in three-dimensional spaces, and simply draw lines. After beginning the first piece, I began to contemplate how we use symbols in our everyday communication and how those symbols would be unintelligible to ancient peoples. Then I decided only to use symbols of our contemporary world – symbols of modern technology, social media, current science, and contemporary issues."
